Gone are the days of being chained to your desk, gazing longingly out of the window and feeling super accustomed to your designated couple of metres. Now, networking, pitching and meetings sees you setting up camp all over the place. Amazing? Of course. New scenery, new people and a bit of breathing space BUT do it wrong and it could impact you more than you think…
We’ve come up with our five top tips to help make the awkward art of hotdesking that little bit easier.
Know the dress code
It may be the norm to wander around your own office in jeans, a cami and kimono, but that agency innovation hub you’re occupying for the day may not be “feeling those vibes”. Standing out is great, but not if it’s for being viewed as scruffy!
Your lunch is not just yours
As tasty as that tuna and garlic pasta looked in the box, remember that the fishy scent will be travelling around the office and most importantly, traced back to you. Is that really what you want?
All things I.T
Make a list of every piece of equipment you will need beforehand and try and obtain as many passwords and connection codes before you arrive. Do you want to find yourself working offline and then realise that the email from your Director actually came through an hour ago? Or, equally, find the need to disrupt the Board meeting to help you connect to a printer.
Confidence is key
Initial impressions count so shying away from phonecalls or sitting alone won’t do you many favours. You’ve no idea what industry bods this team brush shoulders with and simply put, you’re not going to win people over by being a quivering mess. Make it till you fake it!
Building access
You want to strut in and make your entrance but that impression will be hindered you slightly if you are walking around the building searching for the entrance like an under-achieving spy. The last thing that you need is being escorted off the building so have details for your office contact at the ready. They can always rescue you from reception if needs be.
Catherine Maskell, Head of Marketing at Reed also shared advice the employment agency’s own nugget of advice: “Being good at hotdesking is a lot like being a good housemate. You’ve got to be respectful and considerate of other peoples’ possessions and leave the space just as you would wish to find it. You may even want to think about bringing along some hand sanitizer before you start and some wipes for when you’ve finished your day.”
So there you have it – now go forth and get super savvy hotdesker!
