FAKE AND THE CITY

It’s happened. You’ve got the job you’ve always wanted and you’re ready to take the world by storm. In the movies, this is usually when the end credits roll, or at least where the love story takes over. But what really comes next? What happens when the new team you work for start loudly and expressively throwing around buzzwords that mean as little to you as FTSE 100? What happens when you walk into the office and realise that you don’t actually know the correct manner in which to answer that daunting looking telephone in front of all of those judging faces? You’ve applied this rule in the bedroom… you fake it, of course.

So the question is…how do you fake it?  Well, after having a chat with Mind Makeover Artist, Nicci Roscoe, we’ve come up with some ways to help you “fake the fierceness” (for the first few weeks at least). These tips and tricks will help you survive those first few weeks, and prove to your peers that you can handle absolutely ANYTHING that this new job throws at you!

THE FIRST STEPS OF THE REST OF YOUR LIFE

The initial thrill has subsided, you’ve stopped jumping with joy and you’ve found yourself hovering outside the door to the new office all too quickly. This is when the panic sets in and every possible (and probable irrational) doubt that you’ve had comes flooding to the forefront of your mind. What if they made the wrong choice in hiring you and you’re escorted off the premises as quickly as you entered them? What if the team you’re ready to be part of is waiting to pelt you with rotten tomatoes? OK, so it’s highly unlikely that either of the above is going to take place but here’s a handy exercise suggested by Nicci for BEFORE you go to the bloodbath-esque tomato throwing scenario:

“Before you start, imagine what it will be like walking in to your job on the first day. Visualise yourself waking up that morning and getting ready. See yourself leaving home and going on the bus, tube, by car, cycle or walking. Feel how calm you are because you are prepared for this very important day. You are feeling confident because you have researched more about where you are working, what you are going to be doing and the people you are working with. Finally this is it! You are about to walk in and see yourself take a deep breath, put a big smile on your face that gives you a huge confidence boost and feel excited and proud as you take your first steps into your new job/career. See a couple of familiar faces and just be you, relax and see yourself making friends and enjoying your first day”

NOTHING IS BY CHANCE

We’re not at a summer fete and this isn’t a lucky dip. You are in this new role because you deserve it. There may be times over those first few weeks where you feel as though you weren’t the right person for the job, or the girl that competed with you until the bitter end probably would be wearing more appropriate office attire for the first meeting, rather than your flat shoes and trusted trouser suit, but STOP! Nicci has two sentences you need to engrave in that fabulous brain of yours. When things get too much and you find yourself wanting to shrink into the corner and rock yourself into a happier place, give these a try:

“I am here because they want me to be. They like me and believe in my expertise, skills for the job and potential. ’

‘I am prepared and ready because I know what I am doing, fully capable and eager to try’.

LET YOUR AWESOMENESS SHINE

It’s really important to remember that whilst your new boss may have seen your potential a mile off, you’re just a newbie to the rest of the team. It’s imperative that you find the right balance between being the over confident new kid that’s learning to run before they walk and the all-too-humble timid mouse! Take a deep breath, spread on your face a big smile and prove to the team why YOU were hired. Tell them a bit about yourself, enquire into their lives (perhaps not as far as to find out about their last three intimate partners, mind) and show that you’re wanting to be a part of the team! Nicci has come up with a nifty way that will help yourself project the cool, confident you that will undoubtedly come out in a couple of weeks, but is so amazing that your team deserve to see her a bit earlier on!

“If there is someone you admire like a family member or a friend and they always make you feel comfortable and not threatened, imagine how they would act on their first day and how confident they would be. Just for a moment, step into their shoes, BE them and feel their warmth and friendship coming through. Take these feelings with you. If you have a moment of last minute nerves remember what this person would do. You will feel so much better about what you are doing and the exciting first steps you are taking.”

Jumping into something brand new is daunting and difficult but it’s also incredibly exciting. You’ve put the effort into getting where you are now and nobody deserves it as much as you! So, as us ladies have learned very quickly, fake it for a little while and in the end, you’ll believe it just as much as everybody else. After all, a little white lie never hurt anybody…
