Sometimes your office space needs a good revamp. A redesign will get those creative juices flowing again, and will make your work area a more pleasant space to work in. So, if you’ve been considering how to bring a new lease of life to your office, here are some upcycling ideas that will brighten up existing furniture and the room with minimal effort and expense:
Jazz up that chair
Your office chair needs to perform in three ways: it needs to be comfortable, function well and look good. These three basic requirements can be easily achieved with a quick upcycle. Start by replacing padding inside the chair if it has become a bit ‘thin’ over time.
After dismantling your office chair, take the seat and the back rest and cover each with a new fabric of your choice. Use a staple gun and secure the fabric in place, pulling the material tight as you do so. For wheels that stick when rolling around, pick up some new castors online and simply replace the old ones.
Upgrade your desk
That plain, scraped desk you’re using probably isn’t so Instagram-worthy anymore, so why not upgrade it? With some spray paint and waterproof protection, you could have a brightly coloured desk worthy of uploading online to inspire others. Choose a bold colour, such as a bright pink or blue, and ensure you head outside to a well ventilated area before spraying away. Here’s a great tutorial on how to get it perfect first time.
Repurposed spice rack
Those lazy Susan style spice racks are a great addition to an office desk. Simply take the spice jars and clean them out, remove the labels, then spray or paint the rack a bright new colour. Once dry, pop the jars back in and fill them with stationery so that you can easily grab your pens and pencils whenever you need them without cluttering up your work space.
Phone holder
It’s safe to say you check your phone a lot while you’re in the office. On average, we check our phones 85 times a day! So, it’s a good idea to give your phone somewhere safe to sit while you’re buckling down to work. This tutorial by Petro at the Seaman Mum shows you how to do this with just a toilet roll tube, some washi tape and some drawing pins. You can customise it any way you like, and it’s a cheap but effective way of keeping your phone safe and within arms-reach on your desk.
Spruce up old filing cabinets
Wherever you picked your tattered old filing cabinets up from, be it a car boot or your Grandad’s garage, they probably need a tidy up now. This is easy to do with some spray paint and decoupage paper and glue. Simply choose a colour and spray your cabinet, then take your decoupage paper and stick it on to the drawer fronts to create a fun, contrasting look. Take a look at this blog post for inspiration!
